Direct Service Volunteer Description

Position Summary

Crisis response volunteers are responsible for immediate, mobile response to requests from emergency and police services within Guelph and Wellington County. Crisis response volunteers also provide service by telephone and ensure that appropriate options and/or referrals are available to the victim(s). Volunteers are expected to conduct themselves and perform duties in accordance with the policies and procedures of Victim Services Wellington.

Crisis response volunteers are accountable to Team Leaders, the Program Coordinator, and the Executive Director.

Primary Duties

Crisis response

  • Participate in the required number of scheduled shifts per month
  • Respond immediately to requests from police or other emergency personnel by attending on site, at an alternative location, or by telephone as appropriate
  • Provide emotional support and practical assistance to each victim(s) as appropriate
  • Arrange for transportation and/or shelter as needed
  • Assist victim(s) in identifying immediate and long-term needs. Provide information, referrals and advocacy as necessary
  • Follow-up with the victim(s) following initial contact to provide further support, determine status, and identify any further assistance which may be required

Teamwork

  • Attend and participate in volunteer meetings and internal organizational events

Administrative Support

  • Complete necessary reports immediately upon conclusion of requested service, and submit to the office within twenty-four (24) hours or by the next regular work day

Position Requirements

  • Mature, responsible individual, twenty (20) years of age and older
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
  • Must possess or demonstrate the ability to develop effective crisis intervention skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge and understanding or demonstrated ability to understand the victim(s) issues
  • Successful completion of 40 hours of required training
  • Willingness and ability to commit to one year of service and the minimum monthly shift requirements
  • Satisfactory reference and criminal records check, nor have outstanding issues before the courts
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Must not have experienced a traumatic event or received services from Victim Services Wellington during the previous twelve (12) month period.

Office Volunteer Position Description

Position Requirements

  • Participate in the required number of scheduled shifts per month
  • Respond immediately to requests from police to assists those in need within the police station
  • Provide emotional support and practical assistance to the victim(s) on the phone
  • Assist the victim(s) in identifying immediate and long-term needs. Provide information, referrals and advocacy as necessary
  • Follow-up with victim(s) following initial contact to provide further support, determine status and identify any further assistance which may be required.
  • Provide assistance to office personnel – filing, photocopying, special projects.
  • Assist with Victim Impact Statements
  • Requirements are the same as the Crisis Response Volunteers except a driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is not necessary
  • The 40 hour core training for Crisis Response Volunteers is also applicable to Office Volunteers
